Your points, your choice


In line with TNDF’s mission and values, we operate a shopping-style food bank which means that you can choose the food you receive based on your needs and preferences. We aim to provide community members with approximately 14 days’ worth of food each month.

Book an appointment:


Individuals will register with the Nourish House Food Bank on their first visit by answering a few personal questions and providing a piece of identification for all members of the household. If identification is not available, or if you would like to be registered anonymously, please let our team know. Questions asked include name, address, date of birth, dietary needs and preferences, income, and expenses. The information gathered is only used by TNDF, and any statistics we share does not have any names or personal identifiers included. Giving this information is optional, but it is very helpful to us for strengthening programs, receiving grants, and advocating for changes to public policy.


Each month, your household will be offered a points budget to be use when choosing your food. The number of points you receive is determined by the number of people within your household. Items within the food bank have points cost, which are demonstrated on our shelves by using bright colours. For example, any items marked with yellow cost 1 point. As you shop, we can keep track of your points for you. Or, if you’d like, you can shop and keep track of your points on your own. 

Households are allowed two visits each month. You can split your points however you would like between these two visits.

Once you have used up all your points, or once you have visited twice within a month, you must wait until the following month to return. Your points allotment and 2 visits will reset at the beginning of each month. Unused points do not carry over to the next month.

Tips For Making the Most of Your Visit
  • Come prepared with a grocery list – take a look through your cupboards and fridge at home before your visit to ensure you get what you need
  • Bring reusable bags – we’ll give you 3 additional points for bringing your own bags, no matter how many you have!
  • Split your points – by making two visits each month instead of one you can come back to restock your perishable items like milk, eggs, cheese, vegetables, and fruits which won’t last an entire month. Splitting your points also makes it easier for you to transport your groceries home if you are walking. Additionally, because we operate based on community support, the items we have in stock often changes. So, you may find a different variety of items to choose from on your second visit!
  • Produce is free – fresh fruits and vegetables cost 0 points, so please take as much as you would like!
Things to Keep in Mind
  • As a non-profit, we unfortunately cannot guarantee availability of any items
  • On occasion, we may have to limit items to ensure that all community members visiting us have a fair variety of items to choose from
  • It is at your discretion whether you choose to consume any food provided
  • There is a zero-tolerance policy for verbal and physical harassment or abuse, whether it is directed towards staff, volunteers, or other community members within our food bank. Any incidence of harassment or abuse will be documented and may lead to limited access to services and/or other corrective action depending on the severity of circumstances
  • If you are unable to attend an appointment or if you are going to be late, please contact our team as soon as possible to let them know and agree upon an alternative arrangement. Missed appointments take away from opportunities for other community members to be able to visit our food bank. Consistent missed appointments and tardiness without communication to our team may result in you no longer being able to participate in shopping-style, meaning porch pick-ups will be the only option for access

Where does your Pantry food come from?

The majority of our food comes from Feed the Need Durham, community donations, and local farms. We also supplement our supply based on community needs. Cash donations allow us to purchase dairy, protein, or other items we may be short of. When we do shop, we always shop local!
